Our Discovery Learning and Education Officer Catherine Leatherland was delighted to deliver an interactive workshop looking at the role nature plays in improving wellbeing as part of a recent meeting of the Perth Soroptimists.

Perth Soroptimists is a branch of Soroptimist International, a global volunteer-led women’s organisation that works on projects that improve the lives of women and girls locally, nationally and internationally.

The session with Perth Soroptimists came about following PKCT’s previous work with the Perth and Kinross Violence Against Women Partnership, and included several creative activities exploring how nature, arts and crafts can support wellbeing and healing.

Catherine said:

“Nature's role in health and wellbeing is a primary part of PKCT's outreach programme and education strategy- we know how important it is to our mental, physical and emotional health.

“Since working with the Perth and Kinross Violence Against Women Partnership for projects and events last year, we have begun to explore how our outreach activities can help support survivors of gender-based violence through their healing process.

Using elements of our Wild Journey programme, which was developed thanks to generous support from The Gannochy Trust Youth Panel Fund, we looked at how nature can often help to inspire arts and crafts activities, which also have proven benefits in terms of supporting our mental health and wellbeing.

Everyone had a great time and it was really inspiring to see the different creations, with particularly strong pieces coming from the nature poetry activity part of the session.

We look forward to continuing to support the many organisations who are focusing on this important work, and helping everyone to experience nature and the countryside.
